What is Coolant?

Coolant Car Check

Coolant is a common essential fluid to your new or used vehicle on Akron roads, but you might be wondering: “What is coolant?” Coolant transfers heat and regulates the temperature of your engine block and other vehicle parts. It also contains an additive that ensures that it won’t freeze below 32 degrees Fahrenheit and doesn’t overheat above 212 degrees Fahrenheit. Learn more about how to check coolant levels and when to bring in your vehicle for your next service appointment at Jaguar Akron!

How to Check Coolant Levels: What to Look for

Instead of opening the radiator cap to check the level of your vehicle, you can refer to the markings on the side of the reservoir to see if the liquid is at the “full” marking line. If it’s not full, you can then remove the radiator cap and add more coolant, or a 50/50 mix of coolant/water if preferred. When doing this, always be sure the engine is cooled and never open the radiator cap if the engine is hot or has just been used. You should also check the bottle of your coolant to see if it’s already premixed with water, and make a point to inspect the hoses connected to the radiator for any potential leaks or damage.

How to Check Coolant Levels: When to See a Service Technician

Coolant has a consistency that is thinner than oil but thicker than water, so if it appears sludgy or too runny, you’ll want to have it looked at as soon as possible. This can be the first sign of an internal gasket leak which will drain the coolant quickly. The end result will be overheating and severe damage to your engine.

How to Check Coolant Levels: When to Change Coolant

Like your engine oil and other fluids, coolant levels will deplete over time, so you’ll want to have your cooling system checked every three to six months. Typical coolant liquids are blue, green, yellow, or red, but if it’s a dark brown or even colorless, it must be flushed and replaced entirely in order to bring out the best of your car on Cleveland roads.
